- The Feldenkrais Method
- ----------------------
- Some people have found the Feldenkrais Method to be helpful in
- relieving their RSI symptoms. The Feldenkrais Method is a system
- of gentle exercise and hands-on manipulation that encourages more
- effective posture, breathing, and coordination.
-
- The Feldenkrais Guild maintains an international directory of
- teachers of the Feldenkrais Method. You can write to them at 524
- Ellsworth Street, P.O. Box 489, Albany, OR 97321, or call at
- (503)926-0981. In addition, Feldenkrais Resources in Berkeley, CA
- is an excellent source for books, tapes, and other materials on
- the Feldenkrais Method; for a catalog, call 1-800-765-1907.
-
- Michael Krugman <myriad@panix.com> is a teacher of the Feldenkrais
- Method with a particular interest in RSI, seated posture, and
- computers. He will be happy to advise any readers who would like
- information or referrals: write to him at 41 West 86th Street #7K,
- New York, NY 10024.
-
- Feldenkrais Books
- Michael recommends that if there is not a Feldenkrais teacher in
- your area, try the book "Relaxercise" by Mark Reese and David
- Zemach-Bersin. Available from Feldenkrais Resources and in many
- bookstores, it contains Feldenkrais lessons you can do on your
- own. These lessons are of general benefit to posture, breathing,
- and coordination. His experience is that most RSI sufferers
- exhibit some degree of postural disturbance, and that even a small
- improvement in this area can make a difference in how you get
- along.
-
-

- Shiatsu therapist who offers RSI prevention training at work sites
- - a 1 1/2-hour session to a group, and individual follow-ups at
- each participant's workstation. He says "Simple hand and arm
- actions that we take for granted can displace the shoulders, head,
- neck, and back. This creates uneven muscle use and development.
- Over an extended period of time, stress loads become greater,
- causing damage in joints and soft tissue. I have developed a
- system of biomechanics that increases muscle strength and reduces
- the amount of stress generated in normal daily use."
-
- Terry E. McShane of Encinitas CA, (619)753-6556, is an educator,
- lecturer, and consultant in the fields of health and ergonomics.
- She has an M.A. in Psychology and Health Promotion and is the
- author of a book on correcting the unhealthy workplace (see

- SF Area Attorney
- >From Joseph Fegan, (415)922-6840:
- I highly recommend the following attorney: John J. Mullane, Jr.,
- (415)981-6630. He is located in San Francisco and is very
- competent in both Worker's Comp and RSI cases.
-
- Chairs
- >From Shelly Kardon <kardon@a1.benhur.upenn.edu>:
- I am a purchasing agent at the University of Pennsylvania in
- Philadelphia,. I purchase mostly furniture and fixtures and am
- involved in purchasing ergonomic furniture, especially chairs. I
- have found two great ergonomic chairs are the Grahl Xcellence
- chair and the Hag Credo chair. I have also been evaluating
- articulating keyboard trays. Steelcase has quite an assortment of
- adjustable keyboard trays with wrist rests and mouse pads. I would
- like to know if other people have found any other seating or
- keyboard trays on the market.
-
- >From Joan Lichterman:
- I have a Credo model of the Hag chair that's been discontinued,
- but you may find this information helpful in your own search for a
- chair. One nice feature of this chair is the easily adjustable
- back, which can be raised or lowered to give users appropriate
- lumbar support. It's a good chair for me except for the arms: they
- aren't long enough to support my entire forearm (and I have short
- arms!); they don't adjust up or down very easily for people with
- RSIs; and they can't be removed or moved out of the way.
-
- To help me deal with thoracic outlet syndrome, my physical
- therapist recommended putting a board across the armrests so I can
- rest my arms in front of me - she calls it "unloading" my arms, a
- great idea (I do this at home, standing up at the sink or a
- dresser). But this is impossible to do with the Hag chair because
- the arms aren't long enough (a board would bisect my torso).
-
- >From Caroline:
- My new chair is the Obus Forme from the Global Upholstery Co.,
- Ontario, Canada, (416)661-3660. The price puts it out of reach for
- most people (and probably most insurers), but that may come down
- when the chair has been on the market a while (and has more
- competition in its class). The tilt is totally adjustable - you
- can even recline. The back is adjustable and flexible (two
- different backs are available: high and higher) and comes with a
- belted pad that can be used as either a lumbar or a neck support.
- The full list of features of the model I got (Multi-Knee-Tilt
- Mechanism) is:
-
- 1) tilt tension control
- 2) seat height control
- 3) back angle control
- 4) seat angle control
- 5) multi-tilt control
- 6) back height control.
-
- I think the arms I'll be getting are adjustable; the ones that
- came with the chair (mistakenly) are not.
-
- Finding chairs in the Bay Area:
- Back Designs in Berkeley (they've moved from Oakland), (510)849-
- 1923. Very expensive, in part because their staff are all trained.
-
- The Ergonomics Lab in Mountain View. Call (415)964-3135 for an
- appointment.
-
- Just Chairs, a chain, may have chairs that are good for some
- people, but I've never seen any there that would suit me. In
- general, be warned: You could easily pay over $600, in fact, more
- than $1000 for a good chair!
-
- >From Caroline:
- Someone who was consulting me on my workstation and posture noted
- that the arms of my chair were in the way of my arms as I was
- typing. This is especially true of ergonomic keyboards like the
- one I use (the Apple Adjustable), because they fan your arms out
- at the elbow. This helped with the typing but caused greater pain
- in my trackball hand. Another consultant confirmed my suspicion
- that I needed support for that hand. I rolled up some bubble wrap
- left over from the holidays and taped it onto the trackball, so
- that my hand is supported in the neutral position when I use it.
- It made a big difference; I can now use the trackball again
- without nearly as much pain.
-
- On a related note, I called Kensington to see if they know of a
- foot pedal that works with their TurboMouse trackball, which has a
- very smooth action and seems easier to move around, and the answer
- was no. I encouraged them to pass on the request for a foot pedal
- to their product management. Meanwhile, I'm continuing to use the
- Curtis trackball with its foot pedal.

- Newsletter News
- ---------------
- Craig says:
- Thanks to Adam Engst of the TidBITs newsletter on Internet for
- mentioning the RSI Network Newsletter to his readers in late
- January. We saw fifty or sixty subscription requests the week Adam
- mentioned us.
-
- Almost simultaneously, MacWEEK printed a letter which I had dashed
- off in response to their workstation ergonomics piece (above) -
- this resulted in another burst of subscribers and I think we've
- doubled our mailing list in about six weeks.
-
- Do people have information or experiences with ergonomic chairs
- (superchairs? ergoseats? wish we had a better term for them) that
- they can share with RSI Newsletter readers?
-
- I've been giving some consideration to running a "supplement" in
- between Newsletter issues because there's a lot of information
- floating around that should be shared. Please contact me at
- <dadadata@world.std.com> with yea or nay votes. I'm interested in
- your opinions. The supplement would be electronic, not printed.
-
-
- RSI Network Newsletter on CD-ROM
- --------------------------------
- >From Craig
- The RSI Network Newsletter is going full-tilt on both the
- Macintosh and Windows versions of the NautilusCD monthly disc.
- NautilusCD subscriptions cost about $130 per year for 12 CD-ROM
- "issues". Call: 1-614-766-3165.
-
-
- Sharon's (Follow-up) Story: Myofascial Pain Syndrome
- ----------------------------------------------------
- >From Sharon Mello
- You can reach Sharon at (510)794-7521. Please send in your own
- story or helpful tips for other RSI sufferers. If you don't send
- it via e-mail, please mail a Macintosh-readable diskette to save
- everyone keystrokes.
-
- Almost a year ago (in Issue 11), my story was published in this
- newsletter. It told of the almost three years I was on Worker's
- Comp, the many doctors I was sent to who diagnosed my problem as
- tendinitis, the 3000 mg. of aspirin a day I was taking, how the
- state of California rated me as 32% disabled, how my rehab
- counselor talked me into going to school for the hospitality
- industry, and how I physically couldn't go back to my previous
- profession (which I dearly loved) as computer graphic artist. I
- never did find a job in the hospitality industry (hotels, motels,
- restaurants).
-
- Then one day this past summer (1993), I received a phone call from
- Dr. Rick Mehaffy, a chiropractor. He had read my story in this
- newsletter and said he might be able to help me get better. Boy,
- was I dubious of this! But after we talked for about 30 minutes, I
- believed he could help improve my condition to a point where I
- could do stuff again. So I agreed to see him.
-
- After a thorough examination, Dr. Mehaffy said that I didn't have
- tendinitis. He said what I was suffering from was myofascial pain
- syndrome (MPS). This is the result of long hours of putting parts
- of your body through repetitive motion. In my case, it was sitting
- at the computer holding onto a mouse and "etch-a-sketching" on the
- monitor for very long hours every day. My hands and lower arms had
- MPS and my symptoms were burning and itching and sometimes pain in
- the tops of my hands and lower arms (left and right). MPS is
- caused by holding muscles in constant contraction, which damages
- the connective tissues between muscle fibers. The muscles in my
- lower arms were extremely hard and lumpy. This doesn't just happen
- overnight; it's a cumulative disorder and can be prevented if you
- know what to do (I didn't).
-
- Although as of this writing I'm still visiting Dr. Mehaffy once a
- week for therapy, this is how far I've progressed: I'm completely
- off any pain medication. This was my decision because I had to be
- able to tell if he really was helping me get better, which I
- couldn't tell while taking medication to prevent pain. I've
- started my own business of designing and making dried flower
- arrangements and sell them in boutiques. Needless to say, my arms
- and hands are my main tools and some days I work for six hours at
- this. Not only do I maintain my own business, I also take care of
- my house and husband (clean - not as often as I would like to -
- cook meals, take care of 48 fuchsias and other plants, and do
- books for myself and my husband, who is also self-employed). So I
- guess you could say I use my hands and arms more than six hours a
- day.
-
- Sometimes, by the end of the day, I need to put ice on my arms or
- hands for relief of recurring symptoms, but I am getting better. I
- occasionally get depressed because I still can't do all the things
- I want to. But, looking back over the past three years, I can do a
- lot more now than I could before I started seeing Dr. Mehaffy.
-
- If anyone would like to talk to me about this, please feel free to
- call me at (510)794-7521 in Fremont CA - days or evenings. If you
- would like to talk to Dr. Mehaffy, he's available at (415)363-1156
- in Redwood City CA.
